Posted -: 23:35:37 Hello Lesa The Leo brand was made by the Moridaira factory here in Matsumoto Japan. These banjos have withstood the test of time and are still regarded as very good intermeniate banjos The serial number is totally useless as we have discussed here a number of times in determining anything about date, they were not and are not ment to be used by the owner for this purpose by Fender and Fender has kept no records AT ALL in regards to banjos, especially since the sale of Fender by CBS to the current owners in 1985 Hope this helps some Scott. I used to own one many many years ago.They were very popular around the 70's and 80's. You might want to try checking with the Fender company. Posted -: 16:37:23 The year I got out of High School ('81) I bought a Fender Leo from our local music shop. I was a '80 model and they thought it was broken because the bridge was laying down flat. They sold it to me for $50. I stood the bridge back up and had a great banjo to begin learning on.
I sold it about 10 years later for $300. I had no idea how good a banjo it really was until I tried to buy a 'better' one for $500.nothing in my budgeted price range even came close to sounding as good.I felt like a real dummy for selling it.
Fender Leo Banjo Serial Numbers
Listing is for a late 70's to early 80's Fender Leo Deluxe 5-string banjo, made in Japan. It's hard to date these banjos, but this one does appear to have a fairly early serial number on the label inside the pot, and no serial on the back of the headstock as the later models had.
This is an all maple banjo with a beautiful flamed maple resonator, and rosewood fretboard, real mother of pearl fretboard and headstock inlays, and metal tone ring. Banjo appears to be all original apart from the bridge and head, and spikes added at the 7th, 9th, and 10th frets. There are also two small holes on the side of the fretboard on the binding where a previous owner had a 5th string capo installed, which has cause small cracks in the binding around that area as well, which should hopefully be shown adequately in the pictures. This banjo has normal wear and tear for a banjo of this age, but no cracks or structural damage. We tried to show some of the cosmetic damage on the bottom of the resonator in one of the pictures as well.
These old Japanese banjos are EXCELLENT build quality, far better than any modern imports you see these days and definitely comparable to what the bigger American companies were producing during the same era. This is a great looking, sounding and playing banjo, and would be awesome for any bluegrass banjo player looking for something well built but a bit different from the same ol' same ol' you see everyday.
